Advocacy and rights

ACT Human Rights Office - how complaints are handled, guidelines for making a complaint, and on-line complaint forms. "Our mandate is to promote human rights in the ACT by administering the Discrimination Act 1991 and the Human Rights Act 2004."

Office of the Community Advocate - helps people who need protection from abuse, exploitation or neglect,
and are not able to represent their own interests.

ACT Office of Fair Trading - "The main object of the Office is to provide information to consumers to make them informed and confident when making purchases."

Legal Aid (Canberra) - "The Legal Aid Commission of the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) is established under the Legal Aid Act 1977. The aim of the Commission is to work to inform people of their legal rights and obligations and to improve their access to the justice system."

The ACT Ombudsman - "assisting the ACT community by resolving complaints and fostering good government administration".

Disability Action Inc (South Australia) fights for the rights of people with all forms of disability. There are Advocacy Training Packages for sale through this website, and several reports. Home of the DARE volunteer advocacy team.

The Disability Information & Resource Centre - "DIRC" - an organisation in South Australia has a good website with a huge amount of useful information to help people with a disability and their carers.

Enablenet - "The home of disability information on the net" - run by DIRC (see above), but with a national focus.

Acts of Parliament

A good place to look for texts of Acts of Parliament online is the Australasian Legal Information Institute (AustLII ) where you can search the databases for texts of Australian Commonwealth and State legislation, and world laws, and legal cases from the Administrative Appeals Tribunal, Federal Court of Australia, High Court, Industrial Relations Commission etc. There is also a No tables version

The Attorney-General's Department database of legislation Scaleplus includes Commonwealth, State and Territory laws and regulations. Once you have found the Act you want, you can search within it for words and phrases. There is also a No frames version

National Peak Disability Organisations - listed by the Commonwealth Department of Community Services.

The Australian Association of the Deaf - the national peak body for Deaf people who use Auslan.

The Australian Federation of Disability Organisations - being set up as the new national voice to champion the rights of people with disability in Australia.

ACROD - the National Industry Association for Disability Services.

Australian Communication Exchange(ACE) and the National Relay Service: "The National Relay Service (NRS) is an Australia-wide telephone access service available to everyone at no additional charge. If you are Deaf or have a hearing or speech impairment and / or you use a TTY or a computer with a modem, you can access anyone in the wider telephone network through the NRS."

Blind Citizens Australia - "The united voice of blind and vision-impaired Australians"

Brain Australia - an initiative of the Brain Foundation - "support, community education, and research"

Brain Injury Association - Queensland; Tasmania; New South Wales;

Deafness Forum of Australia - The Deafness Forum exists to improve the quality of life for Australians who are Deaf, have a hearing impairment or have a chronic disorder of the ear.

Disabled People's Initiative Australian Capital Territory - "useful and interesting information aimed at consumers with disabilities ".

Disability Australia Limited - "When Disabled Peoples International (Australia) (DPI(A)) closed its doors it was a big loss for People with Disabilities in Australia. However, after discussion with people with disabilities around Australia, out of the ashes, has risen a phoenix in the form of Disability Australia. Disability Australia is now the Australian arm of Disabled Peoples International, a world wide organization of people with disabilities, which has consultation status with the United Nations."

Disability Information & Communication Exchange (DICE) - the offical web site of the National Council on Intellectual Disability - tthe national association representing people with intellectual disability and their families in Australia. Also here is the Australian Institute on Intellectual Disability (AIID).

Headway Victoria - "A community based non-profit organisation working to improve services to people living with Aquired Brain Injury"

National Ethnic Disability Alliance - "the national consumer-based peak body for people from a non-English speaking background (NESB) with disability ..."

Physical Disability Council of Australia - "Mission Statement: By 2010 the needs of people with a physical disability will be met in all Commonwealth Government legislation, policies, services and programs and in all areas of the private sector and the community of Australia, enabling full participation."

Royal Blind Society - "the key blindness agency in NSW and the ACT".
